The Ambition

The Portail des Nations: A Gateway to Multilateralism

In a world where global, political, environmental, social, economic, and technological challenges require collective responses, the Portail des Nations was created as a unique space for discovering and understanding the importance of multilateral diplomacy. Inspired by Ivan Pictet, it is far more than a traditional visitors’ centre—it is a collective educational experience that highlights the essential role of the United Nations and its agencies.

Each year, thousands of visitors come to the Palais des Nations in Geneva. Yet, until now, there was no dedicated space for public education and awareness. Driven by the initiative of Ivan Pictet and Michael Møller, former Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, the Portail des Nations was designed to share the UN’s knowledge and values with the world.

Located at the entrance of the Palais des Nations, just below the Flag Alley right next to the Place des Nations, this new space brings visitors into the heart of decisions that shape their daily lives—whether in peace, security and disarmament, human rights, environment, biodiversity and climate, population migration and forced displacement, health, education, industry and work, or technology and innovation. Using cutting-edge technologies and interactive storytelling, the Portail offers a truly immersive experience.

Finally, under the guidance of the Fondation Portail des Nations, the project aspires to become a sustainable model—combining innovative education with civic engagement.
